Garage Door Repairs and Spares

Your garage door serves as a crucial entry point to your home and ensures the security of your belongings. However, like any mechanical system, garage doors are prone to wear and tear over time.

Understanding the common issues that can arise with garage doors and knowing how to address them can help you maintain the functionality and safety of your garage.

Garage Door Repairs & Spares

Problem Indication

If the door reverses unexpectedly without any obstruction, it could indicate a problem with the safety sensors or adjustment settings. This could also indicate low or no power to the safety device.

Solution

Clean the sensors to remove any dirt or debris that may be interfering with their operation. Adjust the sensitivity settings according to the manufacturer's instructions, and if the issue persists, consider replacing the sensors or more likely the batteries. Further issues may be due to degraded rubber.

Wireless Safety Edge

Garage doors equipped with safety edge features are designed to reverse direction if they detect an obstruction while closing, ensuring any persons in the way are remain unharmed.

Whilst effective, sometimes these devices can require maintenance to improve their longevity.

Noisy Door When Moving

One of the most common complaints about garage doors is excessive noise during operation. This could be due to worn-out rollers, loose hardware, or lack of lubrication.

The simplest and inexpensive solution is to regularly lubricate moving parts such as hinges, rollers, and springs with a silicone-based lubricant – nothing too heavy as this can cause a build up of dirt, which negatively affects your door.

Tighten any loose bolts or screws and consider replacing worn-out rollers to reduce noise. Always seek professional assistance if there are issues with the torsion spring, as it can be dangerous to handle.

A more complicated repair may include a new motor if this is the component that seems to be creating an unnatural noise. Speak with your garage door technician to see what the most economic solution is – new motors can be as little as £450 but can range up to £750 subject to lift capability.

Cones and Cables

By far, the most frequent repair we come across is broken cables on up and over garage doors and sectional doors. These cables disperse the springs tension equally over each side of the door which allows the door to open evenly and safely. If one or both cables snaps or finds itself out of place, this can disrupt the normal working conditions of the door and cause the door to drop on one side and often come out of the runners.

We hold most brands of cones and cables in stock so if you find your door is faulting, we can usually get it back up and running very quickly. The most common brands we carry are Hörmann, Garador, Henderson, Cardale, Birtley and Merlin.

Regular maintenance and prompt attention to these common garage door problems can extend the lifespan of your garage door system and ensure smooth, reliable operation. However, for complex issues or repairs involving critical components such as springs and opener units, it’s advisable to seek professional assistance to avoid accidents and ensure the safety of your home and family.

Broken Springs

Torsion and extension springs (often called side springs) are crucial components that counterbalance the weight of the garage door. Over time, these springs can weaken or break due to continuous use, leading to difficulty in opening or closing the door. Equally if the door is used too infrequently, these springs can weaken when they’re finally used.

Broken springs should be replaced immediately by a trained professional, as attempting to repair or replace them yourself can be extremely dangerous and potentially life threatening. Regular inspection and maintenance can help identify worn-out springs before they fail, fundamentally saving you money.

If you have a particularly old door, you may find that your door doesn’t have springs and relies on a counterweight system. These can be converted to a torsion spring system to add some ease of operation to your door.
